"Sugar and Spice" Show!

"Sugar and Spice"!! An anime show featuring 4 female artists and their "process" of creating characters resembling the sweet or spicy kind.

Their words:

The Beaumont Studios and 4 talented ladies from the Vancouver anime scene are thrilled to announce the opening of Sugar & Spice - an all girls mixed media anime exhibition featuring:Jenn Brisson,Meghan Shaw,Morgan Corkum andRachel Petrovicz

Personally, i don't find the art THAT anime, and i think a lot of true hardcore anime fans would agree... but just throwing it out there... WE ARE NOT TRYING TO RE-INVENT ANIME! Because "anime" is technically the Japanese word for "animation", The Beaumont thought our work fit perfectly. And even when looking at the word "animation", one thinks of movement. So for this show, we were asked to present art from the very beginning stages of our process and then show the final work along side with it. So, the audience can move with the artist and view how each "character" is thought out and actually born into a piece of final art.

Asides from me, the other artists in the show experienced their FIRST showing and i want to say congrats to them and thought the whole night was quite fun! Lots of people turned out and i thought the work looked pretty cool.

Beau Ideal Show

Sorry about the late posts again! I've been SUPER busy and you'll see why...

So, Oct 1-30, me and 3 other artists showed works of the "female" kind at the Hunter Bisset Gallery for their show called "Beau Ideal".

In their words:

Beau Ideal. This show features the amazing work of four very talented Vancouver artists: Jenn Brisson, Stefan Kotter, Lisa Penz, and Peter Winnett.

I wanted to explore the notion of feminine icons, and look at beauty from a different angle. These four artists bring diverse and exciting points of view, broadening the scope of the feminine ideal and providing rich and storied subtexts for each and every image.

I do hope you can all drop by the opening night reception on Friday October 7, from 7 - 10pm. The show will be up from October 1 - 30.

So, here i showed some older works. "Hellena"(this time in her new frame!), the "mermaids", "Estelle" and "Desire".

I met the lovely Lisa Penz and over all it was a gorgeous show!
The VERY NEXT DAY i was in ANOTHER show at the Beaumont Gallery for their show "Sugar and Spice". More info in the next post!

Here's a commission i did for a co-worker that was moving back to Mexico. It was for his daughter and the stripes in the BG were done with the paints he used to paint her room with, so it would be all matchy matchy!

Uncanny Dream: Doll Expo in Seattle!!!

I was happy to be invited by the lovely and talented Redd Walitzki to submit some of my art for the long awaited Doll Expo that happened last weekend in Downtown Seattle!

This week there is another show Uncanny Dreams-Valley of the Dolls at her studio X17, also in downtown Seattle... my pieces are staying in Seattle for this show....

Here's what she wrote about the first event:

I'm excited to announce Uncanny Dream - Articulated Fantasy 2011, a brand new Ball-Jointed Doll Expo in downtown Seattle, WA. This one-day event will feature diorama displays by 7 of the Pacific Northwest's top BJD Customizers. The Expo will also include several Vendors, space for visitors to set up their wares to trade or sell in a trunkshow, and public meetup and photography space.
Admission is Free!

Uncanny Dream will be held Sunday May 29th, 2011 in a large art studio/gallery space in Pioneer Square, right on the Seattle Waterfront. Artists were invited to create fantasy worlds for their dolls to inhabit, ranging from traditional fantasy to steampunk and cyber. We have put together an exciting list of talented BJD customizers from Seattle and the NW region to build these diorama displays, including:
Candygears
Christy (Captured in Thought)
Fenris (resin+)
Kiyakotari
KireiX and Keekster (BJD Cast)
KasaMadhuri777 (Alraune Atelier)

A huge variety of customized dolls will be present, including Soom, Dollstown, Fairyland, Dollshe, Dollzone, and many many more.

We have also lined up exciting vendors to sell clothes, wigs, accessories and dolls, including Jpopdolls and Dollsofmine.com. Other vendors and special activities will be announced as we draw closer to the event.

The main Gallery space will feature the artists' BJD dioramas for you to enjoy and photograph. The large Hallway Gallery will feature the vendors, and have some space for visitors to set up their own wares in a trunkshow format. The large Photography Studio next to the main gallery will be a public meetup area, and has lots of space to setup and photograph any dolls you're bringing with you.

Uncanny Dream is taking place in the 619 Western Artist Building in downtown Seattle, in the X17 Gallery space. There is ample parking underneath the Alaskan Way Viaduct right behind the building (free on Sundays) and a pay-lot adjoining the building. It is also in easy walking distance to Uwajimaya Asian Market & Bookstore, International Model Toys, Pike's Place Market, and the Seattle Downtown Shopping core so visitors driving to Seattle for the event have convenient access to all Downtown has to offer.

La Violenta Tormenta de Arte

Sorry for the late post.... La Violenta Tormenta de Arte, a group exhibition put on by Blind Mute with a Mexican Wrestling theme is touring at the moment. It started in Whistler, then headed to the Beaumont Studios in Vancouver, then Victoria and then back up to Squamish to end the tour.

One of my pieces are in the show and there are a ton of other artists involved. I bought a couple of pieces at the show by an amazing graffiti artist named Jordan Soak. Stoked to pick those up!

Doodle Show

This show's theme was "Doodles"(obvs): silly little drawings. And while there were plenty of those, the artists contributed many different kinds of work that stretched that definition to include cartoons, watercolours, sketches, and paintings. Along with the art, a showcase of local comedians also donated their time and talents during the event.

The Doodle Show took place at The Hunter Bisset Gallery in Tinseltown in Vancouver on Feb 19th, 2011.

Partial proceeds from this show went to Atira Women's Resource Centre's program: Enterprising Women Making Art. All artists involved donated a portion of their sales to the program. The gallery also matched that donation.

As for my pieces, here they are. All with bunnies and heart tissue paper in the bg. They are hung in 5x8" black frames and painted on watercolour paper with acrylic, pen and white marker.

Eastside Culture Crawl 2010

Making "A Monster In The Making"

I've been wanting to incorporate creepy children in my paintings for awhile. I've done a lot of commissions for parents of their kids with lil' Teddymares hiding behind them... but all very calm and smiley and happy times.

Here is a lil' sumptin sumptin i did for the Robots and Monsters Show at the Ayden Gallery this past October. I think i was inspired by an ol' kids book i had...
and maybe a little from my own experiences too.

And now YOU get to see how "A Monster In the Making" was made...

LUCKY!

1. after i prep the canvas or whatever it is i am painting on(usually with paper, tissue and/or spray paint) i'll sketch the character on with a pencil or a pen. Here i've already blocked the character with a base coat.

2. added more colours and figuring out where i want the shading to be

3. back to the 'lighter' colour(s) to accent the highlights and detail. I usually go back and forth with all the colours and just keep building ontop of what i already have each time adding a bit more detail. wooters

4. once i'm happy with the shading and all that jazz, i outline the contour of the subject with either pen, marker, whiteout, paint or all the above. And maybe adding tinier detail as well(like in the doll's stitching, for instance)

Hanging at Terra Housing

Here are pics from when i hung up my art on Commercial Drive over the summer. They were hung at Terra Housing for 2 months. Between that, The Wallflower Show and the Forsya Show, it was quite a busy month of um... showings. Yay walls!

2nd '100 Amigos Show' 2010

El Kartel had their second "100 Amigos" show. 100 artists were given the same size canvas and all had the freedom to do what they do best. It was another great night, HOWEVER, when i got there it turned out that they had "lost" my painting so it wasn't up! After mentioning it to Pablo(the store's owner) he explained how crazy it was there that day and then took off in search for the missing painting. After awhile he came out from the back room holding my painting.
He found my piece hidden in the back...

hmmmm...

Regardless, my painting was finally hung for all to see...

This painting signifies a new step in this "world" that i've created. I've been wanting to combine all my creatures, misfits and creepy characters all together on one canvas. And here i've managed to do just that.

I am excited to see how this "world" will unfold,
what new stories will come out from this new approach...

Here's my submission for the "Dirty Pop" Show that happened at the end of Aug. I had plans to do 2 more... a She Hulk one and a Super Girl one... however, with a day time job, 2 freelance gigs, and a couple of commissions on the go... i figured one painting was plenty. And since this one sold right away, the three paintings will never get to be displayed together *sad*...

Unless the same person buys the other 2!! It's a possibility!

PS. There might be a Bat Girl one in the near future as well... tee hee

I've noticed for a LONG time, that i like to collect things. Duh! Not just for the sake of collecting(mostly) but to one day use these items as canvas. When i walk by a flea market, yard sale, dumpster, etc... i wonder, "what treasures lay within"? I can't help it! I've collected things such as used and broken skateboards(which you might already know), cupboard doors(you've seen my 'Wonderland' pieces?), broken chair seats, random pieces of wood and driftwood, old abandoned instruments... to name a few. I still get the urge to buy new stretched canvas, but i have to stop myself! Why keep buying new stuff when i have a closet and storage room FULL of "canvas" just waiting to be painted on!?

So, for the "Boutique Beauties Show" i finally decided it was time to use some of my odd "canvases". I still have a TON of shit to go through, but this is a good start...

Here are a few of my plastic drum skin paintings. I still have to go through the fibre drum heads i have and a HUGE pile of broken and dented cymbals, an old bass and speakers covers.

Hmmm... maybe a musical themed art show in the near future??

Here are some pics from my art show i had in Second Life, a virtual world. Very surreal but man, that world is huge!

But unfortunately my computer wouldn't let me enter the virtual gallery. I was really curious as to what the show would be like, so i picked an Avatar for myself and called myself Jenner Slingshot. However, my video card wasn't compatible once i tried getting into the actual gallery. Oh well. I heard there was a good turnout and i have a lot of new fans.

Sorry i haven't been posting anything in awhile(been EXTREMELY busy). But i had to post this cuz it's pretty surreal for me...

Today, from 2 to 4pm, my art will be shown in a virtual gallery! The show is called "Pieces"(pieces of art, pieces of skateboards, pieces of paper, pieces of me... you get the idea) Basically, you go to this site called Second Life and create an avatar for yourself, enter the gallery, then walk around and view my shit! Crazy! I'm going to try to be there in attendance, cuz it just sounds too wacky to not, and see who else is there, i guess. Maybe meet people and answer questions for them? i dunno.

Mermaids from the 'Boutique Beauties Show'!

I've always loved mermaids. I love the water. I love swimming, surfing, scuba diving, waterslides... snowboarding(that's a water thing too... but just frozen water)... whatever. I used to pretend i was a mermaid in swimming pools as a child. I loved the movie "Splash". Even as i got a bit older, i loved "The Little Mermaid" and have read the original story many times as youth. I loved mermaids more than Faeries, even! So why had i never painted one before and have painted so many faeries?? Well, that all changed in May of this year! 4 new MERMAID paintings were born for the "Boutique Beauties Show" at Forsya Boutique, shown from mid June to end of July.

*just as a side note: i had prepped and painted these 4 canvases a LONG time ago, and they've been siting there for what felt like FOREVER, not knowing what i'd paint on them. Until one day i used my spray painting technique to complete the edges. Finally, i felt they were ready to be painted on and underwater images first came to mind... it just felt fitting to add mermaids to the center of the canvas, going nicely with the "beauties" theme i had for the show.
i think i chose wisely.

The 2nd Annual Carded Show (Part 2) -the pics-

So "Carded Is Back" (aka: the 2nd Annual Carded Part 2) was held at Ayden Gallery. This time each artist got to submit the original art that they used for their card. If the original piece was not available anymore(in my case, the painting i used to submit for my card was already bought and is now hanging somewhere in Houston, Texas!), then other pieces were accepted to hang in the gallery. So for this show, i painted 2 new skateboards and both sold!

It turned out to be a very busy night(i just came from my first Roller Derby game and was heading to the Cheaper Show Announcement Party right after Ayden).

I bumped into a few friends of mine at Ayden who also submitted for the Carded show. Here they are with their wonderful pieces!!!

I was on the letter 'H' when i completed her and decided to go with Henrietta because the person that commissioned the painting wanted it for his newly renovated home and the name means 'ruler of the household'. Valentine's/Olympic Month!!

So, i have a few shows coming up just in time for Valentine's Day and the Olympics. It's gonna be a busy month!

1. One of them is a group show called The "Heart-On" Show. It's happenin' Sat Feb 6th at Box Studios! RSVP on Facebook or here

2. Then right after on the Sun Feb 7th I'm having a Solo Show at The Whip from 6-9pm!! Sunday is Caesar specials, and it is also their Cask night – starts at 4 and goes until it runs out – they're always busy for this. Please please PLEASE come out and say hello!! I'll have some new stuff to show!! Plus i have a few new prints!

3. The "Carded" Show will be on Feb 27th at Gallery Row on Granville and Broadway. Announcements haven't been made yet about who's in the show, but 50 lucky artists will be chosen to have their art on trading cards with their info for a 'one-night-only-trading-card-night'. I was in their last show and it was so much! It's on Facebook, too.

4. One more group show to work out, then i'll send an update about that, as well. "Murder of Crows" is going to make a come-back! Unfortunately the venue we had slated for Feb backed out at the last minute so we are scrambling to find another location for our show! Any ideas??

Moon and Tree

I just recently sent out a commission i did for someone who works at a radio station in Edmonton called The Bounce. This would be his 5th purchase from me! WOW I have a fan!!

Anyways, the painting was pretty challenging as it was BIG, for one(it's been awhile since i did anything that big!), two, it was supposed to have one of my moon men in it along with a tree and three, i decided i wanted to use ripped tissue to cover the background(which meant i had to tediously place and stick tiny pieces of tissue between all the branches of the tree, and still make it look like it was getting lighter as it got closer to the moon) FYEW!

It needed to be dark, blue and landscape(instead of portrait). I had tons of different ruffs to figure out how i was going to do it, but it wasn't until i saw the movie, "I Sell The Dead" starring Ron Perlman and saw one scene with a tree on the left and moon in the distance, that i immediately found inspiration... You'd think that it would be pretty easy to place a tree and a moon in a painting together, but lemme tell ya... i was having a hard time!

Anyways, here is as idea of what it looked like! The only one like it... "Moon and Tree"

13th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl! Greeeaat success!

The ECC at Parker Street Studios turned out to be an amazing event, yet again! Even though it was A LOT of work and at times, quite over-whelming... it was well worth it!!

Come to the annual Hot One Inch Action show. I am waiting to hear back to see if my button design has been accepted. If so my button will be passed around and collected at the event. I was in the Trading Card Show they had last year, which was a blast. The design i used for this one is based on my painting "A Watchful Eye". Even if i don't get it, you should still go and partake in the festivities! Tons of really cool art on buttons to trade and collect!

The Eastside Culture Crawl is an annual FREE 3-day visual arts festival. This event involves artists in their studios who work on the east side of Vancouver, BC, Canada in an area bounded by Main Street to Commercial Drive and from First Avenue north to the waterfront. On the site you will find complete information about the event, including a 2009 printable map and a list of our participating artists.

The mission of the Eastside Culture Crawl Society is to promote Vancouver's east side artists and their work by fostering excellence, encouraging visibility and forging partnerships. The Eastside Culture Crawl Society brings arts to the community through the ongoing creation of events and programming that support the growth of east side artists.

My newest piece. I had the idea to paint on broken skateboards for over 2 years now. The boards were donated by one of my dearest friend's son, Zoey. I have a ton of 'em. They've been hiding in a trunk for over 2 years and FINALLY i am putting them to use!! The first attempt, called "Broken" was submitted at the Across the Board 2 Show this past Sept at the Chapel Arts Gallery. A show with artists who love the sport.

Jennifer May Brisson was born in Manitoba with a pencil already in hand. When she was 3, her family moved to BC where she developed her skills for the arts as well as an early obsession with skateboards. This lil’ tomboy’s obsession came to a halt when her X-Ray Tech father told her that ‘where there are skateboards, there are broken bones’. Determined to ride, Jenn took up snowboarding, thinking that snow would be more acceptable to her father. And so it was. Jenn made him very proud when she survived her very first half-pipe competition.

In school, Jenn was known as the “school artist” and involved herself in tons of “artsy” activities. After graduating, Jenn continued drawing; enrolling herself in the Classical Animation Program at VFS in 1995. Soon after, Jenn found herself working in the animation industry and continued to do so for 12 years. In addition to Vancouver, work took her to places such as California, Phoenix, Korea and China. During this time Jenn picked up painting and has since had various Group and Solo Shows from Commercial Drive to the West End. After a long run of drawing cartoons for a living, Jenn left her life’s passion and headed to Australia to live out of a car for a few months to collect her thoughts.

One of her favourite discoveries over the years has been the ocean and its waves. Even though painting can be relaxing, when Jenn needs to get away, a surf trip is in the works. She has surfed the waters in Tofino, the US, Australia and in November will be on a board in the Philippines.

Currently, Jenn paints and lives in Kits, works in a Sound Studio in North Van, and rocks out in a band called “Rain City Murders”.

Man In A Globe - My submission for the "Wee Show"

This was my submission for the Wee Show. A super sculpee moon man(based on my paintings) suspended in a retro 8x8 light fixture globe, fixed into a block of wood for wall/table support. The eyes and stars glow in the dark, and is painted with acrylic...

Blue Keds with Jenn Brisson Teddymares

The one's i got for myself are size 7.5 and I have them in Blue and Green. The blue one's are classic style and the green one's have a shorter top, making them look slightly more girly. I am still looking for another place that will produce them for a more affordable price. But for now, these are the only pair out there of the kind. More to come...

GROOVE OPERATOR - CD Release Party!!!

A co-worker and good friend of mine, Josey Watts(Groove Operator) is releasing his first album, "Motion Control"! I am already one of his biggest fans!! This shit is tha BOMB!!!! Seriously, i love it! Eventhough i am playing on the 5th track called "Moments" bustin out some flute licks... or what others might call a... tin whistle, i am not being biased!! It's pretty funkin' sweet!

Some other friends of mine will also be performing that night, such as Mike Paprocki(Echopilot).

I am proud to be a part of the festivities, as well... i will be showing some art, as well as selling some prints and magnets. PLUS Joe will be reuniting with members of an old funk band he was in while living in England... and i've been asked to do a little sumptin sumptin on the mic... well, we'll see...
